The Art of Decay: Petrified Wood
The natural transformation of things have always been a key interest of ours. A rock is a rock; a shell is just a shell, of course, when viewed merely as such. However, we believe that beauty lies in knowing an object’s story. It is through this principle that we take inspiration from nature to dutifully highlight the beauty of each material we work with. Every material is unique from its origin down to its final form.
Just as how pressure makes diamonds, time and decay often turns wood into stone- this is called, petrified wood. Petrified wood or fossilized wood forms over time, through the process of permineralization. This process happens underground, when the wood gets covered by sediments. It’s preserved at due to the lack of oxygen. All of organic matter is replaced by minerals, but much of the detail such as tree rings remain visible. It takes approximately a hundred years to complete this process.
Petrified wood is a beautiful material to work with and is often cut into different shapes for making jewelry, table tops and many other things. However, aside from churning objects out of this remarkable stone, people have come to believe that this stone is ideal for meditation and establishing deep roots as its earth energies are said to keep you grounded and stable.
As an ode to this beautiful stone, we thought- what a beautiful idea to have a piece of accessory made out of petrified wood in every home. Skillfully crafted and delicately in-laid, the stone’s natural design is the main highlight of this stone serving board. Absolutely perfect for every gathering.
